Manuel Neuer named as new captain of German national team

Joachim Loew announced the decision to the rest of his squad on Thursday, the day after Schweinsteiger emotionally bought the curtain down on his global career with his 121st and final cap in the 2-0 win over Finland.

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has been named the new captain of the world champions after Bastian Schweinsteiger announced his retirement following Euro 2016.

Do you think Schweinsteiger deserves a chance under Mourinho? The midfielder has had a hard summer, after being frozen out of the Manchester United team by Jose Mourinho, and while he has vowed to keep fighting for a place in the Premier League side, it will be nice to see the 32-year-old back on the pitch again, even if he does not know how long he can play. “It would be a dream to once more show the [United] fans what I can do”, he said.

Schweinsteiger finishes with 24 goals in 121 appearances for the Germany national team during a career spanning 12 years.

“Mourinho showered [the 34-yearold Zlatan] Ibrahimovic with praise for still playing and if I get a fair chance, I believe in my abilities”.

The 32-year-old announced his decision to walk away from global football following Germany’s Euro 2016 semi-final defeat to France.

Bastian Schweinsteiger insists he has no “personal problems” with Jose Mourinho and reiterated his desire to force his way into Manchester United’s first-team plans.

It seems a long, long time since Schweinsteiger was lifting the World Cup trophy in Brazil after Germany’s extra-time win over Argentina. “I’m pleased to have been given the opportunity to play a testimonial”.

Having been hindered by lack of form and fitness, the German has not started a game for United since January. We have a lot of leaders in the squad, all of whom would be highly capable as captain.

“We have to wait to see what happens in September and October and how things will develop, but I will definitely not stop playing football”.

“Besides his extraordinary qualities and performances as a footballer – especially 2014, in the most important match in the past years – what was and is for me so impressive and remarkable is his humanity, his honesty and, of course, his fairness”.
