Many black pastors say meeting with Trump not an endorsement

Donald Trump’s campaign canceled a Monday press conference with black religious leaders after numerous of the pastors set to attend the event signaled that they would not endorse the Republican presidential candidate. Some pastors were frustrated by news reports claiming that the religious leaders were officially endorsing Trump, a claim they have since vehemently denied.

A “Trump insider” told Politico that 40 pastors were prepared to endorse the billionaire after their Monday meeting, but when the group expanded to 100 pastors, it also included some religious leaders who opposed Trump’s candidacy.

Trump’s latest dust-up, which boiled over during the past few days, stems from his mockery of a New York Times reporter while Trump was giving a speech in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, last week.

After the meeting, Trump – who has courted controversy on a range of topics, notably his remarks about Mexican immigrants and his support for registering US Muslims – said he would travel to the southern US state of Georgia for “a big rally”.

Trump is meeting with a coalition of black ministers amid tensions with the black community.

Bishop Paul S. Morton tweeted Friday that he refused to meet with Trump, calling the candidate disrespectful.

“I have a great relationship with the black pastors”, Trump said.
