No group has claimed responsibility of the attack, but President Hollande had linked it to terrorism.

He warned that France was “facing a struggle which will be long”.

Counter-terrorist investigators were leading the probe, into the attack, local media said, and a local government official said weapons and grenades were found inside the truck.

A woman signs the book of condolences in front of the French embassy in Rome on July 15, 2016, after the deadly attacks in Nice.

“There were lots of children, young children, who had come with their families to watch a fireworks display, to have some fun, to be happy together”, he said. “Any US citizens in Nice should contact friends and family directly to inform‎ them of their well-being”.

“The FCO are in touch with the local authorities to seek more information and we stand ready to help any British nationals and to support our French partners”.

The truck accelerated as it approached the crowd that had gathered on a seaside promenade to celebrate the national holiday.

European Council president Donald Tusk said it was a “tragic paradox” that the victims of the attack in Nice were celebrating “liberty, equality and fraternity” – France’s motto – on the country’s national day.

Hollande said France’s state of emergency, set to end later this month, will be extended another three months.

A state of emergency was instated eight months ago the day after Islamic State gunmen and suicide bombers killed 130 people in Paris.

“France is filled with sadness by this new tragedy”, he said. CBS News says French anti-terror police are taking over the investigation. The first thing he saw was a large white truck on the Promenade des Anglais.

Since the November 13 attacks, France had been under a State of Emergency, and authorities were on high alert due to UEFA Euro 2016, the European men’s football championship, which ended July 10.

US presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump offered starkly different responses to the tragedy. Her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, called the attack “horrible” and said he was postponing plans to announce his vice presidential running mate on Friday. After driving through people for two kilometers, the driver began shooting into the crowds until he himself was shot and killed by the police. Ringe said at 7 a.m., hours after the attack, she could still see several bodies covered with sheets from her window.
