Marc Leishman not playing at Rio Olympics because of Zika virus concerns

World number one Jason Day will represent Australia at the Summer Games and is expected to face off against Jordan Spieth of the United States, Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland and this year’s Masters champion Danny Willett of England.

The decision was not easy. “But I feel like I do that every week”.

“Given Marc’s rightful dedication to his wife and young family, I’d have been surprised had he made any other decision actually”, Baker-Finch said.

In reply, Scott said: “I expected someone to not understand my position. some people who know me a little better understand I don’t just do things for a reaction or no reason”.

“I think it would be fantastic”, he said. “I haven’t been playing well this year, but that can turn around this week, next week”.

Though China is far from a winter sports power, the sports ministry said hosting the Winter Olympics would help the country further raise its influence on worldwide sports and spur the development of winter sports in China.

“I’ve always watched the Olympics growing up and for golf to be back in after over a hundred years, I’ve said it before, it’s nearly like a dream come true, a dream that I couldn’t have before”, Fowler said Wednesday in Charlotte, N.C.

Leishman, Australia’s third highest-ranked golfer, came into contention for golf in Rio when Adam Scott withdrew from the event, the Queenslander saying the chance to win a gold medal didn’t fit into his schedule.

Golf is scheduled for the 2016 Olympics in Rio and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, but the future beyond that is uncertain. The world No. 35 is concerned he could contract Zika in Brazil and transmit it to her. Another 100-year absence is a possibility.

McIlroy accepts why some players have opted out but he insists he will be doing all he can to win a gold medal. “I’m going to get all my shots next week from the doctor on site at the Players (Championship), get my shots for Zika and everything else I need and go play four rounds really competitively and try to win a gold medal”.

“I might look back in 20 years’ time and a gold medal might be one of my crowning achievements”, said McIlroy.

“It is an opportunity to do something you’ve never done before”.
