Marcelo Bielsa has resigned as manager of Ligue 1 outfit Marseille.

Bielsa said: “I haven’t spoken with anyone at the Mexican Federation”.

OM’s Twitter account carried several quotes from Bielsa’s press conference.

His initial one-year contract featured a second-year option, which was exercised after an off-season of mystery as the club repeatedly claimed an extension for a third year was close to being confirmed. On Thursday everythign seemed positive and today we receive this huge blow.

“He was an important part of the club, for the team. But we respect his decision”.

Monaco fared much better in their first game of the season, triumphing 2-1 at 10-man Nice.

Abdoul Camara fired home the opener on three minutes and Gilles Sunu wrapped up the points late on with a debut goal to cap a memorable evening for Stephane Moulin’s side.

Elsewhere, Gazelec Ajaccio missed a penalty as they were denied victory at fellow promoted club Troyes in the first ever top-flight.

In his one season in charge at the Stade Velodrome, Bielsa led Marseille to a fourth-place finish – although just eight wins in Ligue 1 in 2015 cost them a shot at the title.
