Karen Beckwith, the chair of the political science department at Case Western Reserve University, said there’s a symbolic power in “having a black woman who is a member of Congress, a former mayor of Warrensville [Heights], Ohio, chairing on a day-to-day basis the work of the Democratic National Convention….”
“I thank Secretary Clinton and her team for recommending me to serve as the permanent chair of the 2016 Democratic National Convention”, Fudge, who represents Ohio’s 11 district which includes Cleveland and Akron, said in a statement released Saturday.
“I am going to be respectful of you and I want you to be respectful of me”, Fudge told the group of angry delegates.
Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Weston, got a roaring applause when she came on stage Monday afternoon to gavel in the convention.
But in a clear sign that she is anxious about Sanders’ backers not rallying behind Clinton, Fudge told the delegates “we can’t govern if we can’t win”.
But also cheers – from Clinton’s supporters.
Donna Brazile is the interim DNC Chair.
Sanders, who will address the convention Monday night in prime time, issued a statement calling for a new direction for the party that would welcome the working class and young voters – and remain neutral in future Democratic primary contests.

Leah Daughtry at Minuteman Press in South Philadelphia on October 15. “She’s good”, said Rep, Charlie Rangel (D-NY) to NBCBLK during an interview in downtown Philadelphia. “They’re not going to get on property if they do”. “I just want us to do what Democrats do, we’re gonna run the convention, we’re gonna make sure that everybody understands that it’s fair, that everyone has an opportunity to say what they want to say, and we’re gonna move forward”, Fudge told NBC today.
