Marco Reus out of Euro 2016, Schweinsteiger in Germany squad

Marco Reus has been left out of Germany’s squad for Euro 2016 due to injury concerns, head coach Joachim Löw said on Tuesday. For Reus, this is the second successive major tournament he will sit out, having missed out on the 2014 World Cup in Brazil with an ankle injury.

Low confirmed that Reus is struggling physically telling a press conference: “It has been a bitter decision for us and for him [Reus], and a disappointment for us all”.

Bastian Schweinsteiger received some positive news today, though, as the Manchester United midfielder was included in the final 23 on whom Germany will be relying in France.

Reus, Karim Bellarabi, Julian Brandt and Sebastian Rudy are the four players to have been cut from Low’s extended squad.

Low is disappointed that Reus was unable to win his own fitness battle and added: “It’s a shame because he would have strengthened us”.

“The medical staff could not give a clear prognosis for Marco”, Loew told reporters.

Three players from Real Madrid and three from Atletico Madrid will compete for the final four spots in Spain’s squad for the European Championship.

The 27-year-old, considered among the most talented German players of his generation, had another injury-plagued season with Dortmund and went into the German training camp nursing an adductor muscle injury.
