The Smith statue has been at the U.S. Capitol since 1922.
An online survey from the Florida Department of State has been posted and will be up until June 10, per the Palm Beach Post.
Bill sponsors insisted that they are not removing Smith because he was a Confederate general as critics have contended. Backers said they pushed for the change because of Smith’s limited contribution to Florida history.
The person has to be a Florida native or a Florida resident, and have been dead for the last 10 years or more.
