The commander of the Marine Corps Barracks in Washington says a Camp David guard killed by a hit-and-run driver was acting in a characteristically selfless manner when he was struck.

Witnesses told troopers at the scene that the vehicle briefly stopped north of the crash, but the driver then drove from the scene without speaking with anyone.

They say Ferrell was assigned to Camp David, best known as a presidential retreat, and known formally as the Naval Support Facility in Thurmont. 15, north of Auburn Road, in Thurmont, shortly before 11:00 p.m. on September 29, 2015. Police say the truck should have damage to its right side.

Investigators believe the striking vehicle is either a truck tractor or a heavy duty pickup truck that was towing a auto trailer.

Maryland State Police Crash Team are continuing to investigate the fatal incident.
