Mr Vader, who runs his own gym, said he used his name to raise money for a number of causes in the town of Canandaigua, including the local food pantry, The Salvation Army and military veterans.
He continued, “I just gravitated toward Darth Vader, he was the man. He carried an aura of leadership, toughness and didn’t say much to get his point across”. He likes to test his toughness by competing in half-marathons and other endurance events.
For 13 years, Vader has been fighting leukemia and a serious bone marrow disorder, which is treatable.
A year ago however, he also did something else to strike back, something most would probably never even consider: He legally changed his name to Darth Vader.
Vader told the D&C that the name change wasn’t hard, but he did have to sign documents promising not to use the Force for evil character’s likeness for his own profit. He is now on the Bone Marrow Transplant list at Seattle’s VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Washington state.
He’s an outpatient at UR Medicine’s Wilmot Cancer Institute, and since 2002, has completed 15 sessions of chemotherapy, the Democrat & Chronicle reported.
MI coach Jim Harbaugh is a fan of Star Wars and continued a family tradition of seeing the movie with sons, Jay and James, last week for the midnight opening of “The Force Awakens”.
The aim of the mass was not to be “too Christian or too Star Wars, but to find a good compromise”.
“It was kind of like a snake shedding the skin type of thing”, Vader said.
