Mariners, Iwakuma throttle Red Sox
The Mariners rallied from a 2-0 deficit with a two-run fifth inning but couldn’t generate much offense after that, falling 3-2 in 11 innings to the Boston Red Sox Friday night at Safeco Field to split the four-game series.

Travis Shaw, who had a solo homer in the second, opened the 11th against Cody Martin (1-2) with an opposite-field single to left against the shift. Brock Holt delivered the go-ahead RBI, singling a ground ball up the middle just off the glove of a diving Shawn O’Malley, which allowed Shaw to score easily. In the 11th, pinch-runner Luis Sardinas was left at third when PH Seth Smith struck out to end the game.
With the loss, Seattle fell to 54-53 and continues to tread water in hopes of putting together a run of wins. Now Porcello understands what it is like to pitch well and lose games.
Moncada, as an global player, was not part of baseball’s amateur draft, instead signing a contract with a whopping $31.5 million signing bonus with the Red Sox at the age of 19 in February of 2015, after spending almost a year in Guatemala following his departure from Cuba.
Benintendi, making his first career start, recorded the first two major league hits. Miranda, who was acquired in a deadline deal that sent veteran starter Wade Miley to Baltimore, allowed two runs on eight hits over six innings.
Miranda showed a fastball that touched 95 miles per hour and sat around 92-94 miles per hour with decent off-speed stuff.
Though he has yet to play the position in professional ball in the United States, Yoan Moncada says that he played third base for two years with his Cuban club, Cienfuegos. Guy had a great game by all accounts, throwing eight innings, striking out eight, and giving up four hits and a walk. It’s an outing that the Mariners would gladly take considering the circumstances. “After the first inning, he settled in nicely”.
The crowd of 33,369 gave Miranda a nice ovation for working out of the jam. O’Malley hit the first pitch into the left-field seats for his first homer of the season and second of his career.
Miranda showed a fastball that touched 95 miles per hour and sat around 92-94 miles per hour with decent offspeed stuff. “Standing just 5’10” and weighing 170 pounds, Benintendi packs a whole lot of power into his swing, having amassed 20 home runs in the equivalent of one entire minor league season.
Blue Jays 3, Astros 1: Josh Donaldson hit two home runs, and Marco Estrada threw seven solid innings in Toronto’s victory over Houston. Ziegler issued a walk to start the inning, but then got the next three outs in order.
In Atlanta, Ender Inciarte broke a tie with an RBI single in the fifth inning and the offensively challenged Braves had 15 hits against Pittsburgh.
Guillermo Heredia followed with a bunt single.
In the 10th, with two outs, Pedroia singled and JBJ walked on a 9-pitch battle.
That didn’t work. Dae-Ho Lee, the next hitter, singled to right field to tie it 2-2.
That reference was to the Mariners’ second hit, which came in the sixth. With one out, Shaw hit a rocket to first base that was snared by a “leaping” Lee, who then touched first for the inning-ending double play.
Last night they blew a chance to capitalize on Porcello’s second consecutive complete game.
In this one, he gave up a one-out single to O’Malley and two-out walk to Franklin Gutierrez.
NOTES: Boston 1B Hanley Ramirez (sprained left wrist) was not in the lineup Wednesday, and he could miss the rest of the series.

“It felt good to get it out of the way”, Benintendi told reporters in Seattle.
