Mariners rally from 10-run deficit to beat Padres

Although starting pitcher Colin Rea struggled, allowing six runs in 5.1 innings, the real damage was done by the Padres bullpen, who had yet another meltdown, though Thursday night was a new low for a team whose season has been full of them.

If you were keeping score at home, you must really like the Mariners.

Seattle Mariners’ Robinson Cano, left, and Leonys Martin celebrate during the Mariners’ nine-run seventh inning against the San Diego Padres in a baseball game Thursday, June 2, 2016, in San Diego.

The Mariners completed their first-ever 10-run comeback in team history. Let’s not concede a 10-run lead in this one, guys.

Besides being an unforgettable night, it’s one of those games we’ll look back on if the Mariners make the playoffs as one of the best illustrations of how this team is different from the same-old M’s of the past. San Diego has had a great run and for a large portion of this year when you looked at our seven-eight-nine, they were as effective as the seven-eight-nine last year. The ball beat Upton to the plate, but he slid around the tag of catcher Nick Hundley and rolled to tag the plate with his left hand.It was the Padres’ first straight steal of home since Everth Cabrera caught the Dodgers Kenley Jansen napping with his back to the plate July 14, 2012 at Dodger Stadium. The Padres rebounded a night after blowing a 10-run lead in a 16-13 loss to Seattle at Petco Park.NOTES: The Rockies activated C Nick Hundley from the disabled list Friday.

The win moved Seattle back into a tie for first place with the Texas Rangers in the AL West. Thanks to a deep offense led by veterans like Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz, the Mariners now own the second-best OPS in the American League despite playing their home games at spacious Safeco Field. And they’re doing it with a surprising amount of power. In the end, Miley was pulled after 4.2 innings and allowing nine earned runs on 12 hits.

The next two innings were a combination of improbable and unbelievable, the seventh inning especially, with the Padres throwing 66 pitches, and it lasted more than 40 minutes.

Padres: RHP Andrew Cashner (2-5, 4.79) is scheduled to start for the Padres. The Rangers have scored 20 runs in their last three games and four or more runs in seven of their last eight games. One of them, Brandon Maurer, didn’t even record an out.

And on the other side of the fence, the “embarrassing” Padres likely didn’t help themselves in the eyes of their “positive reinforcement” team executive.

Melvin Upton Jr. pulled off a straight steal of home Friday night. USATSI
