Mariners to hire ex-Angels GM

The Seattle Mariners will offer their vacant general manager position to Jerry Dipoto, a source told ESPN Major League Baseball Insider Jim Bowden on Monday.

One twist emerged over the weekend: Eppler had been viewed as the favorite to become Dipoto’s full-time replacement with the Angels, but reports indicate Josh Byrnes has emerged as a candidate for that post. The 47-year-old has been working as a special consultant for the Boston Red Sox since early August.

Since the firing of Zduriencik, the Mariners have been under the control of interim GM Jeff Kingston who reportedly had an interview with the team.

Scioscia was asked Monday about Dipoto’s hiring.

But Dipoto’s clashes with Scioscia were eventually his undoing.

Asked whether he believed he and Dipoto shared a similar philosophy, McClendon said, “I would think so”.

He pitched eight seasons for Cleveland (1993-94), the New York Mets (1995-96) and Colorado Rockies (1997-00), posting a record of 27-24 with 49 saves.

“Jerry impressed us at each step of the process“, Mather said.

Dipoto, 47, will be running his third team.

Dipoto has made multiple strides in his career.

Nationals Manager Matt Williams said Harper, a leading National league most-valuable-player contender, was held out of the starting lineup for Monday’s home finale against Cincinnati for “his part in the altercation” with Papelbon on Sunday. He returned to Colorado as director of player personnel in 2005 then to the Diamondbacks as VP of player personnel in 2006 before being named GM on July 1, 2010.

Dipoto and Yankees assistant GM Billy Eppler were reported to be the two finalists for Seattle’s GM opening late last week. He signed Mike Trout long-term and traded for Huston Street and Andre Heaney, among other moves.

Jerry Dipoto was not out of work for long, jumping at the chance to take over as general manager of another AL West franchise.

The Mariners now hold the longest playoff drought in baseball.

Hernandez has thrown 201 2/3 innings this season, his lowest total since 2008, but with the Mariners eliminated from playoff contention and Hernandez unable to reach the 20-win mark, there’s not a compelling reason to send him back out to a mound. It’s now up to Dipoto to make sure they don’t botch another offseason.
