Mariners win 7th straight at home with 7-6 win over Brewers

The Seattle Mariners offense continues to produce, and they’ve won seven of their last nine games when scoring more than three runs.

Milwaukee rallied behind three solo home runs and then pulled within a run in the ninth but ended up suffering its fifth consecutive loss. “That’s what the job called for tonight”.

Seattle also got key RBI hits from Stefan Romero, Nelson Cruz and Ketel Marte as the Mariners added on and didn’t rely exclusively on the long ball.

“Let’s keep trying to put ourselves in that situation”, Brewers manager Craig Counsell said, “and one of these nights we’ll get it done”. Diaz struck out Hernan Diaz, stranding runners on the corners, for the final out to pick up his ninth save of the season.

Having already been bit by the injury bug, starting pitchers Wily Peralta of the Milwaukee Brewers and Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners head into Saturday’s showdown with a little bit of momentum. Cano is hitting.440 (40-for-91) when connecting on first pitches with 10 home runs and 27 RBIs, leading the major leagues in hits and RBIs in that category while tying Baltimore’s Chris Davis for first in homers.

Villar and Broxton opened the sixth inning with back-to-back shots off Seattle starter Wade LeBlanc, pulling the Brewers within 4-3.

LeBlanc (3-0) was able to limit the damage to those three solo homers, although he lasted just 5 1/3 innings. He hit two homers and drove in 19 runs, and also struggled as a bat off the bench, going 4-for-25 (.160) as a pinch-hitter. Aside from three walks, he didn’t allow a hit through the first 10 outs. Cano broke a 1-1 tie with his 28th homer of the year – a two-run shot in the fifth.

“A little bit of nerves, walking a couple guys in the early innings”, Suter said.

The Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners begin a three-game series Friday night. Elmore initially made the catch but lost the ball as he hit the ground.

Oh, and he’s the first lefty to start a game for the Brewers since August 28, 2013. Milwaukee had used just right-handers in its starting rotation for almost three calendar years – a span of 474 games. But it’s somehow only the second-longest streak of its kind, as the Dodgers started only righties from September 24, 1992, to July 13, 1997 – that’s 681 games without a lefty on the mound. The longest streak still belongs to the Dodgers, who used just right-handed starters for 681 straight games from 1992-97. The Brewers also activated OF Domingo Santana from the 15-day disabled list and designated OF Ramon Flores for assignment. The Mariners recalled OF/1B Stefen Romero from Tacoma and optioned RHP Joe Wieland there.

The Brewers are 0-5 in their last 5 during game 1 of a series and 6-2 in their last 8 vs. Peralta allowed one run in six innings in his last start against Cincinnati.
