Barry was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead Sunday morning between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.

Barry was partying with friends in a Wellington Park apartment when he collapsed; his friends tried to revive him but were unable.

Barry had struggled with drug addiction and had run-ins with the law in the past.

Christopher Barry, 36, was the son of Marion and Effi Barry.

Barry’s father gained notoriety in 1990 after being busted on video smoking crack cocaine, but he remained a popular figure in D.C. politics, again becoming the district’s mayor in 1995.

In 2015 Marion C. Barry pleaded guilty to charges incurred after an outburst at local bank. Cora Masters Barry, widow of Marion Barry, confirmed to Sherwood that Christopher Barry died. In 2013, he was charged in Virginia with driving under the influence and possession of marijuana.

The older Barry died in 2014, leaving a vacancy in the D.C. Ward 8 council seat and his son ran for the position the next year in a special election, but lost that race.
