Betsy Sutherland led the parade as grand marshal and led past grand marshals, and members of local government, along the parade route.
Many throughout the metro are scrambling to put the final touches on parade floats but police want to remind people that they will be out in force during the celebration.
All of the proceeds from the parade will be donated to Birth Haven, a non-profit organization that provides shelter, support and education to pregnant homeless women.
St Patrick’s Day, celebrating Ireland’s patron saint, brought out thousands across the island as temperatures plummeted once again.
The Virginia Military Institute Marching Band performed as part of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Manhattan on Saturday. On the morning of the march, there is a Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The 2018 parade will begin at 7:30 p.m., an hour later than in previous years.
Parade-goers should dress warmly as Sunday is expected to be sunny, but quite cold, with winds coming out of the northwest, said Kim Buttrick, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “It’s better being on the other side”, he said.
John Levey, a member of the Wantagh American Legion Pipe Band, gets ready to march in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Manhattan on Saturday.
She was riding along the parade route in a Central Park horse carriage, driven by a family friend.
The parade was a familiar occasion for Matthew McCrosson, 68, who has frequently marched in it during the past half-century. “And her little costume is a little jockey or her back so she is like a little horse”, Teresa Mears, Kansas City resident, said.
“The people out here, the parade, it’s just downright fun out here, man”.
Superintendent Tom Murphy with the Traffic Division in Dublin, said: “We’re asking people, if possible to use public transport”.
