Hughes is now a favourite with bookmakers to be the next Premier League to leave his post, with odds shortened after Sunday’s 4-1 humiliation at the hands of Crystal Palace.

The Football Association have fined Mark Hughes following his sending-off against Tottenham.

The club, who are now bottom of the Premier League, have said they want to speak to the FA about a “potentially inconsistent approach” from match officials following the charge against Hughes.

“Certainly, there is a realisation that things aren’t going for us at the moment”.

Stoke host Hull in the EFL Cup on Wednesday before Saturday’s league visit of West Brom, managed by their former boss Tony Pulis. “It was really good to get one anyway and important as a team that we got the three points”.

“We knew if we started quickly, like we did against Middlesbrough, we’d get some early goals – and it turned out that way”.

Stoke also suffered a slow start last season but recovered to finish in the top half of the table.

Hughes retains the support of the club’s board and will be given time to instigate the recovery. Sunderland will need to use their home crowd to get inspiration but it will not be easy as the team is still rebuilding as they have only recently changed manager.
