Mark Richt Agrees to Become New Coach of the Miami Hurricanes

Georgia’s coaching search could be headed for a swift end, but the school was tight-lipped Wednesday about its progress and scheduled no announcement about who would succeed football coach Mark Richt. McClendon will coach the team in its bowl, which is yet to be determined.

As for Georgia’s postseason, it remains to be seen whether Richt sticks around and coaches the Bulldogs.

“I do understand what’s expected”, Richt said.

“One, he liked (Richt’s) system, really liked the style and personality and felt that was the coach he really bought into, what he said and how he did it”. A source of Bruce Feldman’s said that the school could pay up to $4 million to its head coach, but how much it’ll pay Richt isn’t yet known. Golden was sacked in late October following Miami’s 58-0 loss to the now top ranked Clemson Tigers.

He coached the last 15 season at Georgia, where he went 9-3 in his final season before he was dismissed on Sunday.

He initially planned to coach the Bulldogs in their bowl game, but told his players the Miami job was something he couldn’t pass up.

The University of Georgia formally announced Richt’s firing on Monday.

Rockets offensive coordinator Jason Candle was promoted to head coach, three days after Matt Campbell left the school to take over at Iowa State. Georgia closed the regular season with four straight wins, including last week’s win over Georgia Tech, but it was not enough to save Richt’s job. He then returned to Florida State in 1990 and served as the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator where he coached two Heisman winning quarterbacks in Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke and won two national titles (1993, 1999).

Richt will be Miami’s fifth coach since 2000, taking over the historic football program after it finished the season under interim head coach Larry Scott, who replaced Al Golden.

“I can’t wait to get started”, Richt said.

“I will love to see Mark Richt in (an) orange and green coaching uniform in 2016 as a Hurricane”, running back Mark Walton wrote on his Twitter account Tuesday, according to the Sun-Sentinel. Look at Texas where Charlie Strong is two years into the rebuild in Austin and has 10 wins to show for it and next year may not result in a bowl game.
