Mark Richt hired as Hurricanes head coach

Others that have interviewed with Miami, the source indicated, include former Rutgers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano, a former Hurricanes assistant, and Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen.

Richt, 55, returns to his alma mater, where he was back-up quarterback to NFL Hall of Famer Jim Kelly from 1978 to 1982. Both of those schools have since hired coaches, with the Hokies hiring former Memphis coach Justin Fuente and the Bulldogs reportedly hiring former Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Hurricanes fired Al Golden in October.

Richt went 145-51 in 15 seasons with the Bulldogs, winning two SEC titles and making 15 straight bowl appearances.

Mark Richt remains interested in another coaching job and said Monday he will listen “to anybody who has interest in me” as he prepares for his final game as Georgia’s coach.

ESPN’s Brett McMurphy has confirmed the report, but Mark Schlabach, also of ESPN, refutes the report.

Richt takes over a Miami program that hasn’t won more than nine games in a season since 2003 and hasn’t won a bowl game since 2006.

Those were the first words out of Georgia Basketball Coach Mark Fox’s mouth, after his team won their third game of the young season Tuesday night. The only year you haven’t asked is my first year as the head coach.

“Several sources told CBS Sports on Wednesday afternoon they believe Richt is Miami’s No. 1 candidate”.

Obviously with the experience and success Richt has had, including his ties to The U, this could end up being a great fit.

Before taking over at Georgia ahead of the 2001 season, Richt spent a decade as an offensive assistant coach at Florida State under Bobby Bowden.

Last month, Davis was outspoken about his interest in the UM head football coaching job, but has since limited his comments on the matter, according to The Sun-Sentinel. Tri agreed there was more to the decision than who was coaching, but added, “definitely the coaching staff was a big part of it. The school environment, just the whole campus, everything, he fell in love with”.

CanesInSight.com had the initial report.

It is unclear whether Richt still plans to coach Georgia in its bowl game.
