Mark Richt hired as Miami Hurricanes head coach

Georgia athletics director McGarity expressed his gratitude for Mark Richt’s years at Georgia.

He was a quarterback for the Hurricanes from 1978-82, serving as backup to future Hall of Famer Jim Kelly.

Georgia was 145-51 (9-5 in bowls) in Richt’s 15 seasons at the school.

Now all Richt has to do is transform the Canes into an instant Atlantic Coast Conference power that soon reestablishes itself on the national stage. You may have heard. However, he did address the reports after Wednesday’s practice, saying, it’s not his “position to confirm any of this stuff, and I really can’t confirm it”.

The University of Miami may have gotten their guy.

UM was prepared to spend approximately $4 million on a coach, sources said. What would he get for that? It will be fascinating to watch the new man try.

Richt should have been the clear No. 1 candidate from the moment he became available. He won consistently in a hard conference, playing regularly against teams that went on to win national titles. It could also be the start of a major reversal for Miami, which fired Al Golden on October 25.

Richt has proven to be a much better coach.

Richt was an assistant coach at Florida State before taking the Georgia job.

If you’re a 55-year-old football coach who has just been fired, you couldn’t have found a sweeter landing spot. No one knows who will coach. This news makes it less likely, and means that either Smart could take over early, or an interim coach will coach the Bulldogs for one game.

“I love my alma mater”. Money should not have been an issue.

Just days after being pushed out by Georgia, Richt has reportedly agreed to return to his Sunshine State roots and take over a program that had become nearly an afterthought over the last decade. He also led the program to six SEC East division titles and won SEC coach of the year in 2002 and 2005. He ascended to offensive coordinator before leaving for Georgia. “I’m told his deal is very similar to the one he had at Georgia”. Davis last coached the University of North Carolina from 2007 to 2010. Being able to afford Richt is a sign Miami could at least be headed in the right direction in terms of commitment to football.

Among the players Richt will coach next season: standout quarterback Brad Kaaya, who will be a junior. His run at Rutgers did not offer the heft of resume that UM should demand.

For the second time, Richt will head to Miami to try to play a role in a revival.
