Mark Richt Will Be Miami’s Next Coach

Rose Bowl management committee chairman Scott Jenkins said the Rose Bowl isn’t required to take the next highest ranked Big Ten team behind the conference champion. Miami has announced there will be a news conference held Friday at 10 a.m.to introduce its new head coach but did not mention a name.

Georgia has not confirmed reports that Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is the school’s choice to replace Richt. Richt said on Monday that “about five” schools had already contacted him.

Recently fired Georgia head coach Mark Richt interviewed for the Virginia coaching vacancy on Wednesday, NBC12 has confirmed through sources.

MICHIGAN ASSISTANT TAKES OVER: Maryland has hired Michigan defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin on Wednesday to be its head coach, taking a key assistant away from its Big Ten East rivals.

Alabama running back Derrick Henry, Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey and Iowa cornerback Desmond King are the five finalists for the Walter Camp player of the year award. “I miss coaching quarterbacks, I miss calling plays, I miss that part of it. Whether it’s in the role of head coach, coordinator, quarterbacks coach, whatever it is”. The Miami Hurricanes will be getting a coaching upgrade with Richt. He brings a resume from Georgia that should have Miami fans salivating: 145 wins in 15 seasons and multiple opportunities to win one of the toughest conferences in football.

Bulldogs assistant coach Bryan McClendon, who coaches wide receivers, will step in as interim head coach for the bowl game. “To coach one more time with these guys and finish the season?”

“Coach Richt embodies the competitiveness, the integrity, the passion, the abilities, and the experience to lead our young men to ACC and national championships and help them become men of character and success long after”, athletic director Blake James said. “I’ll say this: if and when I do coach again, I’m looking forward to coaching again, in terms of being hands-on”, he said.

Richt, who loves working with the position, will inherit a great quarterback in Miami’s Brad Kaaya.

Richt was sacked Sunday at Georgia despite being second all-time in coaching victories at the school.

His resume, though, impressed decision makers at Miami, paving the way for him to return to his alma mater, where he was played for Howard Schnellenberger and was a backup to Jim Kelly.
