Mark Richt Will Not Coach UGA’s Bowl Game

Mark Richt has agreed to become the next head coach of the Miami Hurricanes, according to multiple reports.

Richt moves to Miami, Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is expected to move to Georgia, and the coaching carousel is in full swing.

Smart was the solution to Saban’s problem at LSU, and has been with him for all but one year since then.

Richt said he plans to do more hands-on quarterback and offensive coaching than he did late in his time at Georgia, and he has a good one to work with in Brad Kaaya.

Sources told ESPN that in the Monday news conference, Richt stated he wanted to coach again. Richt made $4.1 million past year at Georgia, ranking 12th nationally.

“I thought it would be a replay of the LSU thing, as soon as the last game is over we’ll announce he’ll be back”, Bowden said, referring to the about face LSU officials had with Les Miles. This comes just three days after Richt was let go as Georgia’s coach.

When Richt left Georgia – officially by “mutual agreement”, a term Richt took a playful and telling swipe at Friday – he thought about taking a year off to catch his football breath.

It’s unclear if he will retain any current Hurricanes assistants, such as popular interim coach Larry Scott (formerly the tight ends coach and run game coordinator), offensive coordinator James Coley or wide receiver coach Kevin Beard, all of whom players have vocally supported in recent weeks. Georgia boosters, fans and administrators, however, apparently got exhausted of waiting for the team to take that next step, as the Bulldogs have not won an SEC title since 2005.

“Returning to “The U” is truly an honor and I am humbled by the responsibility of leading our storied program”, said Richt, who played under Howard Schnellenberger at Miami in the early 1980s.

For Richt, whose. 740 career winning percentage is the fifth best among active FBS coaches, it is a homecoming.

“First coach to ever offer me face-to-face was Richt”, Quarterman wrote.

“I think the players kind of get it so everybody’s kind of zeroed in on what we have to do on Saturday”. The lone recent exception to that trend was Jim Donnan, who was Marshall’s coach when hired to replace Goff following the 1995 season. On the recruiting side, I think Richt kills it. He’s the kind of coach who will be respected enough to fill out a great staff and make parents and coaches want to send their kids to Coral Gables to play.
