After releasing Sanchez, the Broncos signed Austin Davis as a backup to join Siemian and first-round pick Paxton Lynch on the roster.

Trevor Siemian won the Denver Broncos starting quarterback job through a mixture of steadiness and spunk.

Siemian had been named the Broncos starter for the 2016 season, which will begin Thursday with the defending Super Bowl champions hosting the Carolina Panthers.

In four games for the Philadelphia Eagles in the last season, Sanchez completed a 616 yards and six touchdowns, with six interceptions. Or possibly because anyone who is paying attention knows that Sanchez likely is done in Denver.

Kubiak said that seventh-round draft pick from Syracuse was experimenting on a punt that special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis has been working on with him when he shanked the 18-yarder.

A person with knowledge of the deal said the Cowboys agreed on a one-year contract with Sanchez, who will back up rookie Dak Prescott while Tony Romo recovers from a back injury. “Sanchise” infamously spent his first five years with the New York Jets, leading the team to the conference championship in his first two seasons in the league. When training camp opened it appeared Siemian had some ground to make up to overcome Sanchez, but on Saturday in week three of the preseason, Siemian showed the Broncos coaching staff all they needed to see. The Denver offense didn’t even score a touchdown until the fourth quarter of that game and the defense did most (if not all) of the work.

Hillman led the team in rushing last season, but played only sparingly in the Super Bowl when C.J. Anderson ran for 90 yards and Denver’s only offensive TD.

Once Romo is at 100 percent and ready to return to his starting position under center, Sanchez shouldn’t serve as much more than the third-string quarterback behind the entrenched veteran and the upstart rookie.

Notes: The Broncos released P Britton Colquitt, who would have counted $4 million against the cap, along with WR Bralon Addison and OT Kyle Roberts.
