Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s Twitter and Pinterest accounts have been hacked, and last month’s huge LinkedIn password dump being considered the reason behind this high profile security breach.
It is speculated that the hacking may have been linked to LinkedIn’s password breach of 2012 when the company was the victim of an unauthorized access.
In a statement emailed by a spokesman Monday, Facebook said Zuckerberg’s Facebook and Instagram accounts had not been breached.
Don’t re-use passwords: Once a hacker has cracked a password for one of your accounts, they’ll try to use it to gain access to all your accounts. The scope of the breach came back into the news in May of this year, when hackers announced that they were willing to sell information related to the 117 million accounts that were compromised. The team also briefly commandeered Zuckerberg’s Pinterest account, which has just a few boards and pins.
In the case of Tenacious D, hackers used that Twitter account to falsely announce the death of Jack Black, while Bon Iver’s Twitter was used to spread false cancer rumors regarding the musician, according to Billboard.
“In fact, we should all be very angry – the vast majority of the recently reported account compromises appear to relate to leaked usernames and passwords”.
He said: “If Mr Social Media’s accounts can be compromised, with all of the knowledge and resources he and his team have available, we should all be taking notice”.
Zuckerberg’s Twitter and Pinterest accounts were taken over in recent days because he reused the password: “dadada”, reports the Wall Street Journal. OurMine has also claimed to have attacked a number of other targets, including Soundcloud and PewDiePie.
