The Padres made it 8-0 on Yangervis Solarte’s two-run homer in the sixth. Travis Wood replaced the struggling Strop with runners at the corners and two outs in the seventh.

Kershaw was 11-2 and touted a 1.79 ERA before the injury.

The Cubs rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning – capped by a bases-loaded walk for a tie and a wild pitch to score the winning run – for a 5-4 victory over the Marlins on Wednesday and a sweep of the three-game series.

If the Miami Marlins hope to return to the postseason this year for the first time in more than a decade, a wild series finale against the Chicago Cubs could be a good teaching tool.

Miguel Montero led off with a double and went to third base on Javier Baez’s single.

“I don’t think anybody would be satisfied with anything less”, added second baseman Ben Zobrist, who drew the bases-loaded walk that tied the game at 4-4 in the ninth.

But Chicago managed to slowly fill the bases, and after giving up a sac-fly to Dexter Fowler, the Marlins soon found themselves in an uneasy 4-3 lead with the bases fulls. He made one relief appearance for Iowa on Monday in Omaha, striking out three batters in a scoreless ninth inning.

Teixeira’s home run, the first for the switch-hitter off a lefty since July 31 past year, put the Yankees ahead 6-3.

Phelps, a 29-year-old veteran of five big league seasons, picked up the win in his last outing on July 30, a 2 2/3 inning effort against the Cardinals.

St. Louis sent nine batters to the plate against Cody Reed (0-6) in the first inning, with Moss and Greg Garcia each driving in a pair of runs. He allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out eight.

The Marlins appeared on track for a victory after Mathis clubbed a go-ahead two-run home run in the seventh while starter Tom Koehler allowed just one run on five hits. Iwakuma struck out seven and walked none, leaving with one out in the eighth after Benintendi’s second hit.

Justin Morneau homered for Chicago.

Brad Miller and Kevin Kiermaier also homered for the Rays.

But Koehler, who worked an effective six innings in 88-degree heat, was left with a no-decision. Enny Romero and Ryan Garton completed a two-hitter. Ultimately, however, the Fish fell for the second straight game in the series.

The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Jason Hammel on the bereavement list and recalled right-handed pitcher Justin Grimm from Triple-A Iowa. Pujols also finished with three hits to go with three RBIs.

BRAVES 8, PIRATES 4 Ender Inciarte broke a tie with an RBI single in the fifth inning and Atlanta had 15 hits to beat visiting Pittsburgh. They are 17-38 at home. It’s the longest streak by a Reds player since Brandon Phillips hit in 22 in a row in 2007. He led off the first with a triple and scored on catcher Willson Contreras’ single. Smith gave up two more hits before Joe Maddon removed him for Carl Edwards Jr., who struck out Mathis to end the inning.

Chicago cut it to 4-2 in the eighth when Fowler scored on Fernando Rodney’s wild pitch. Christian Yelich got the scoring started in the first inning, when he doubled to left, scoring Dee Gordon.

St. Louis had lost back-to-back games on walk-off hits, including a 7-5 loss to the Reds on Tuesday night that ended with a three-run homer off Seung Hwan Oh. It was Donaldson’s third multi-homer game this season.
