Marlins consider Bonds as hitting coach

Almost a decade later, he is suddenly in demand.

Bonds makes his home in the Bay Area, and the report leaves questions as to his willingness to relocate for the job.

“In what promises to be a bombshell move, if executed, all-time great slugger Barry Bonds is under consideration to become Marlins hitting coach”, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. If hired by the Marlins, Bonds would coach Stanton, their $325 million slugger, who has 181 career homers even though he just turned 26. But Mark McGwire, another prominent character from the steroid era, was hitting coach under Mattingly with the Dodgers and has used coaching to regain acceptance in Major League Baseball. Roger Clemens, despite strong accusations of steroid use, is a special assistant with the Houston Astros. That year was his last in the game in any capacity. He and the team have not begun the 10-year personal services agreement that was part of his last contract as a player; the agreement was delayed while Bonds fought his felony conviction for obstruction, which since has been overturned. Bonds has worked as a guest instructor for the San Francisco Giants in spring training since his playing days ended. Juan Nieves is also reportedly being considered for the position. 298 hitter while also tallying 762 home runs and 1,996 RBI as a member of the Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates.

But Bonds has taken selected players under his wing in recent years, working with free-agent outfielder Dexter Fowler the past two offseasons.

Menechino has served as the team’s primary hitting coach since October 11, 2013, after spending a number of seasons in the New York Yankees’ farm system.
