Marlins’ Giancarlo Stanton could be headed to disabled list

Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton and left-hander Adam Conley went on the disabled list Sunday, a double whammy for a team seeking its first playoff berth since 2003.

White Sox: RHP James Shields (5-14, 5.43 ERA) starts the second game of the series on Saturday night.

After giving up two runs in the first inning, Koehler got them back when he hit a two-run single off Sale’s right foot in the fifth.

“We’re putting our list together of options and he’s an available player, so he’ll be on that list and we’ll see where it goes”, said Hill of Rodriguez, who was released by NY on Friday and is expected to clear waivers today.

“I’m not really doing too much to help”.

“I just need to get my fastball down”, Cashner said.

“We’re going to look at everything”, Hill said. FanGraphs rates the Cardinals as the favorites to take that second wild card, but the Marlins’ schedule the rest of the way is pretty soft, with just four series remaining against teams now in playoff positions (Indians, Dodgers and two versus the Nationals).

Chicago starter Carlos Rodon (3-8) pitched six innings to record his first victory since beating Kansas City on May 22 – a span of nine starts.

It hasn’t been a great season for Stanton. “But we had a mission today – go up there and find a way to perform”.

Jonathan Schoop had himself a day with a two-out three-run home run in the ninth inning. Last season he played in 74 games.

But unlike Friday, when they slowed down considerably after scoring three times in the first two innings, the White Sox kept going.

“It’s kind of nice to come to the ball park and not have “BP” and just play baseball”, Eaton said.

Stanton is the heart of the Marlins lineup and is a huge home run threat with 25 home runs and 70 RBIs this season.

Stanton started a stretch of loud contact off Shields when he homered to left center in the second inning to get the Marlins within 4-1. The victor of the All-Star Game’s Home Run Derby last month is batting.244 with 70 RBIs after overcoming an extremely slow start.

Conley gave up five runs in four innings and said he has been dealing with soreness in his pitching hand that has been getting worse.

Marlins: LHP Wei-Yin Chen (elbow) has begun a throwing program, and the earliest he might return is mid-September, Mattingly said.

Phelps is making his fourth career start against Cincinnati and is 1-2 with a 3.43 ERA in five appearances against the Reds.
