Marlins shut out Rockies

In a game that featured eight home runs – all of them solo shots – Mark Reynolds hit the go-ahead homer in the sixth inning to lead Colorado to a 5-3 win over the Miami Marlins. In fact, heading into the night, five was the previous record.

The Marlins have yet to record a four-game sweep since moving into Marlins Park stadium four years ago. He had gone hitless in the previous three games before going 3-for-5 today.

The eight solo home runs accounted for all of the runs scored in the game, setting the Major League record.

Justin Bour hit a two-run shot for his 11th homer, and Christian Yelich had a two-run single and hiked his average to.319.

Marlins RHP Paul Clemens, recalled Sunday from Triple-A New Orleans, will pitch in the majors for the first time since 2014 when he starts Monday against Colorado LHP Jorge De La Rosa (3-4, 7.61 ERA) in the series finale.

Mark Reynolds added two more for Colorado, and the strikeout maven now has six home runs thus far in his 10th season.

Trevor Story, Nick Hundley, and Charlie Blackmon also homered for the Rockies, who salvaged the final game of a four-game series with Miami.

While Koehler (6-6) labored with a career-high walk total, the bullpen breezed through the Colorado lineup again. De La Rosa, still looking to find his form in the rotation, surrendered back-to-back homers to Ozuna and Giancarlo Stanton in the opening frame, marking the first time all season the Marlins had hit consecutive homers.

The Miami batting order is a pretty stout crew overall.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly picked up on the problems with Clemens, who is 0-3 in six big-league starts. “It happens quite a bit”, Clemens said.

J.T. Realmuto homered, doubled and reached twice on infield singles, with his extra-base hits coming in run-scoring innings when Stanton also reached.

“I’m feeling good at home plate”.

CL A.J. Ramos pitched a flawless ninth inning and struck out two to earn his NL-leading 22nd save of the year.

Miller (2-6) allowed one run and five hits, striking out five in his first start since May 24.

If there was ever a place and a time where knocking home runs would be surprising, it was inside Marlins Park after the Rockies had just endured a brutal offensive stretch.

Ozuna and Stanton hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning for an early lead. One possibility is RHP Jordan Lyles, who joined the team on Sunday but was not immediately activated.

With the victory, the Rockies avoided what would have been Miami’s first four-game sweep over Colorado since 1996. The Marlins host the Atlanta Braves for two games.
