Marlins’ Stanton takes early Home Run Derby lead
Frazier got off to a slow start, with just three homers in the first minute. Frazier had two home runs of more than 440 feet in the semifinals with a long of 448 feet.

Seeded third, Duvall had the advantage of hitting second and knowing he only had to surpass Myers’ 10 home runs. He walloped the top eight longest home runs on the evening, and almost touched 500 feet twice. Former Mariner Mark Trumbo, who leads the majors with 22 homers at the All-Star break, beat Corey Seager.
Stanton continued to dominate in the second round with an additional 17 home runs.
The AL-leading Rangers are only sending Cole Hamels and Ian Desmond to Petco Park, which might be good news for a team that lost nine of 12 to end the first half. In the other semifinal, Frazier defeated Duvall 16-15.
Stanton’s 61 homers traveled an estimated 27,187 feet – or 5.15 miles.
Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins has won the All-Star Home Run Derby with an impressive display of power that bested defending champion Todd Frazier of the Chicago White Sox. Giants catcher Buster Posey is fifth, followed by Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo, Marlins center fielder Marcell Ozuna, Rockies left fielder Carlos Gonzalez and Cubs shortstop Addison Russell. “I figure it’s a waste if I don’t bring this bad boy home”, he said, per the Associated Press (via ESPN.com).
“That was the best part of the experience”, Cano said. He was among those who was amazed by Stanton, because seriously, everyone was.
Padres All-Star and recently-announced ASG starter, Wil Myers, will compete in tonight’s derby and represent the host city, like Gary Sheffield and Fred McGriff before him back in 1992. Before winning at Cincinnati as a member of the Cincinnati Reds, he advanced to the finals at Target Field in Minneapolis in 2014.
Duvall had 11 home runs when he took his timeout with 1:08 left.
Gonzalez had his work cut out for him going again Frazier.
Frazier won the title a year ago when he was with the Reds.
That set up for an intriguing final between Stanton and last year’s champion Todd Frazier. Stanton did make history though, tying the amount of home runs hit in a single derby at 41.
Trumbo needed 18 to move on to the finals.
The seeding was determined by home run totals through July 6, with the higher seeded player batting second in each run.

Stanton won going first in each of the three rounds. In the first round, he went deep on 24 of 30 swings. He was not hitting towering shots, but he was doing a good job of getting the ball over the fence.
