A 55-country product recall from United States chocolate maker Mars due to plastic found in one of its products is believed to include the UK.

Happy go lucky travellers in at least 55 countries will not be able, at least for the present, to pull out the highly sought after “Snickers” bars for an instant bite after chocolate giant Mars ordered a massive global recall of contaminated “Mars” and “Snickers” bars. The move affects all Mars and Snickers products, Milky Way Minis and Miniatures, as well as certain kinds of Celebrations boxes. Bijveld could not give the exact number of chocolate bars produced daily at the factory, but said about four million items were being recalled in The Netherlands alone.
“We can not be sure that this red piece of plastic isn’t in any of our other products”, it added.
Time delays between customer complaints and recalls are not uncommon since companies often receive notices, some fraudulent, about foreign objects in food, said Stephen Robb, a partner at Weightmans LLP in Leicester, who represents manufacturers and their insurers on product liability matters.
It is not known how many products are affected, but the US-based company has warned that chocolates listed in the recall must not be eaten. The German news agency dpa cited a Mars Germany spokesman saying the voluntary recall affects products made early this year in the Netherlands.

The company said it was an isolated incident and that the recall is specific to products manufactured at the Netherlands facility during a limited production period – 5 December 2015 to 18 January 2016.
