Marshmallow arrives for the Sony Xperia Z5 range in Japan

While Samsung finally began its Android 6.0 rollout last month, Sony’s efforts have remained nearly entirely in beta, five months after Marshmallow was officially released.

The Xperia Z3 Plus, Z4 and Z5 have been scheduled to receive the latest Android Marshmallow update and this will happen from March 7.

In a post on the Sony Mobile blog, the company revealed that the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update will be made available for the Xperia C4, C5 Ultra, M4 Aqua, M5, Z2, Z2 Tablet, Z3, Z3, Z3 Compact, Z3 Tablet Compact, Z4 Tablet, Z5, Z5 Compact, and the Z5 Premium in Europe.

Since the beta program was appreciated by Z3 and Z3 Compact owners, the Xperia Z2 is now also included in the program. The beta program saw up to 10,000 people get registered, something that meant Sony had quite some reasonable feedback. This was actually expected, however, there is still no word of when this update will be getting out of Japan.

Most of Sony’s Xperia Z series devices are now running on the Lollipop version of Android.

However, Sony confirmed that it will not be updating the Xperia Z1 and the Xperia Z1 Compact devices, which were released back in 2013.

The update introduces several new features including Runtime Permissions, Doze mode for improved battery management and Google Now on Tap, which brings the functionality of Google Now to every app. Obviously, with Sony having been with this Android M OS since previous year October, they’ve played around with it. According to company officials, the rumors about an upcoming Xperia Z6 were not true, and it looks like the Z series of smartphones was substituted by the just revealed Xperia X line. It is also possible to use simple swipe gestures on the camera app when moving between modes. For those who enjoy customizing their home screens, the new launcher offers the ability to choose between various transition effects when switching between panels.
