Martellus Bennett: Chicago Bears looking to trade tight end

The free-agent class of tight ends contains satisfactory options if not elite ones, but the draft class is not top-heavy.

When the Bears signed Martellus Bennett they knew there would be a risk and so far that risk hasn’t paid off. According to multiple reports, the Bears are trying to work with Bennett and his agent to find a agreeable landing spot for the veteran tight end. A rib injury sent him to injured reserve last season, keeping him out of the final four games.

Bennett, who’s been with Chicago since 2013, had 53 receptions for 439 yards and three touchdowns last season.

For all intensive purposes, the Martellus Bennett era in Chicago is officially over. He had a career year the next season with 916 receiving yards and six scores. While the Bears are looking to move on from Bennett this offseason, they are looking to retain tight end Zach Miller but will wait and see what the open market value is for him.

This news comes just one week after Bears general manager Ryan Pace avoided discussing Bennett’s status with the club.

During the season, Bennett reportedly complained about his usage in the red zone, and the Chicago Tribune reported that Bennett had an “outburst” at practice prior to the team’s Thanksgiving game in Green Bay.

Despite the report, Bears chairman George McCaskey said he was unaware of plans that involved getting rid of Bennett.

If the Bears were to trade Bennett, Khari Lee and Gannon Sinclair would be the only two right ends on the current roster.
