Manchester United will be sweating over the fitness of new star striker Anthony Martial, after he left Wembley Stadium on crutches last night following the friendly with England.

“He’s in quite a bit of pain after the match as a result of a play inside the area”, France manager Didier Deschamps said of the 19-year-old striker.

Vice-captain Carrick suffered an ankle injury during England’s 2-0 defeat to Spain on Friday, leading Roy Hodgson to voice his fears that the 34-year-old had suffered ligament damage. “I think it’s just a knock rather than anything else to the top of his foot”.

Manchester United doctors are expected to take a closer look at Martial once he returns to the club and Louis van Gaal will be hoping that the injury is nothing serious than a heavy knock.

And the versatile Antonio Valencia, who has undergone foot surgery, is another long-term absentee.
