Martial wins Man of the Match award against Swansea
Van Gaal lost his previous three league games against Swansea, all 2-1, and when Gylfi Sigurdsson headed an equaliser for the visitors following Martial’s opener for United, a fourth defeat in a row by the Welsh side looked on the cards.

Bastian Schweinsteiger acclaimed an “unbelievable” goal by Wayne Rooney after his Manchester United team-mate created a piece of history in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Swansea City.
“Certainly at home we have played many, many matches like that but we don’t score and that is our problem… goals are the most important thing”.
With United having ended their poor run there is now hope Van Gaal can take the team forward, although it still must be said that the first-half was much more of the same stuttering football that has haunted United supporters over the course of this campaign. The two have scored a combined six goals in the Premier League this term. We are still near the top of the league and the gap is less. “Now I have a good hope this is a starting point for more”.
United defender Chris Smalling added: “Today it was all about the result”.
The Dutchman made just the one change from the draw with Chelsea as Phil Jones came in for Matteo Darmian, while only four Swansea players kept their place from their stalemate with Crystal Palace. “We have to work, prepare the game, perform and then evaluate the game again”.
“Now we are playing much more matches but still it is an achievement”.
Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, right, celebrates with teammate Anthony Martial after scoring … “I give trust to the players”. It was a badly needed three points for United manager van Gaal, who had been forced to deny he was considering quitting over Christmas. Only it shall raise the confidence and lower the pressure because the players had a lot of pressure to do it in 90 minutes against an opponent that is not so easy. While it’s unlikely that LVG will stick around for two decades, this Rooney goal might just have saved Van Gaal’s job. While the latter could prove an easier negotiation, trying to get Lukaku away from Everton would be an nearly impossible task.
The Poland global denied Rooney multiple times earlier on in the game but could nothing to stop his 77th-minute victor.

There was still only a smattering of boos for United at halftime, despite the team’s below-par showing, and the crowd finally came alive when Martial came in off his left-wing position and met a cross from the impressive Ashley Young with a downward header into the net.
