Each player will be required to compete in two of the four team matches.

The first four Presidents Cups – 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2000 – featured 32 matches.

Finchem also took one small step toward eliminating a glaring weakness in the event – both teams run by one tour.

The PGA Tour eliminated sudden-death playoffs for Sunday’s singles and will award each team a half point for draws after 18 holes.

“I would play [in the Ryder Cup] if I was in the top two or three [qualifiers]”, the 51-year-old said.

Finchem added the decision to implement changes would “strike a balance between maintaining the unique makeup of The Presidents Cup… and the competitive environment for both teams”.

The event brings together the leading 125 players from the FedEx Cup points table, this amount reducing to 100 for next week’s Deutsche Bank Championship, to 70 for the BMW worldwide and to the leading 30 for the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

And after sitting next season out as a TOUR member, the 2014 U.S. Open champ can continue as a member in 2016-17 under his multi-year exemption. Saturday will consist of four matches of fourballs and foursomes, followed by 12 singles matches on Sunday. The global Team will feature the top-10 non-American and non-European players in the world rankings as of September 7 this year.

As of Tuesday, no South Korean ranked inside the top 10 on the worldwide Team’s standings, though Danny Lee, a South Korean-born Kiwi, was in 10th place.

Starting the final round of the last regular-season event in 47th, Ishikawa had an eagle, four birdies and two bogeys for a 4-under 66 at the par-70 Sedgefield Country Club, carding a 9-under 271 total.
