Marking the 30th anniversary of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the King Center is focusing on the civil rights icon’s call for freedom, his daughter Bernice King said.

A Sunday evening wreath-placing ceremony celebrated the “legacy of love” left by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – and urged those in attendance to pass that legacy on.
US stock and bond markets will be closed on Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, but it will be business as usual for Globex electronic trading and in overseas markets.
Events, celebrations and tributes for King will also be held in other parts of the D.C. area.
At the Grace Reformed Church of Flatbush, located 1800 Bedford Ave., the community will gather for the annual Martin Luther King, Jr.
When I see Americans fighting for economic, environmental and social justice or the self-evident truth that black lives matter, I know that Dr. King’s teachings are still as meaningful and powerful as they were in Birmingham and Selma many years ago.
The program included guest speakers, music, arts, and dialogue-all to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King as well as commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. “Parade offers MGM Resorts a unique opportunity to stand alongside our community as we celebrate a great man’s enduring legacy”, said Jim Murren, Chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts International.
For more than 20 years, the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that promotes volunteering, has led the MLK Day of Service as the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service. Anybody at the event can watch a short play about Robert F. Kennedy’s speech the night King was assassinated. “Dr. King’s message reverberates through the corridors of time”. “But regardless of race, we should be able to come together”.

In the evening, a candlelight vigil in honor of Dr. King is taking place at Monroe Park.
