Nine-year-old Isiah Lewis of Phoenix recited Dr. King’s famous “I have a dream speech” from memory.
“It’s very progressive for them to move it ’cause clearly, I guess, that indicates we’re progressing”, Annette Wilson, who attended the parade for the first time this year, said.
“Because they’re underprivileged or possibly living below the poverty lines, doesn’t mean they don’t have the same goals, the same aspirations, the same dreams that we had”, said Brown.
The state NAACP said there is still more work to do to honor King and the theme of this year’s rally is “education equity”, with speakers calling for SC to spend more money to help students in poorer, more rural school districts, which frequently have a majority of black students.
“But I would think he would also think there’s a long way still to go”, said Jennifer King of Raleigh. The painting of the murals was organized by the organization City Year, which seeks to provide support to students in low-income communities. The event included preparing a garden bed and packing bags with books, the White House said.
