Martinez, 19 hits lead to easy Cardinals win
The Cardinals and Mets close out their three-game series tonight at Busch Stadium.

To take Niese’s place on the Mets’ roster, third-year reliever Erik Goeddel will venture back to NY. Five more relievers followed after that, with Jeurys Familia pitching the ninth for his 42nd save as the Mets (63-62) drew within 3 1/2 games of St. Louis for the NL’s second wild-card spot. St. Louis sends 11-game victor Carlos Martinez to the mound to oppose deGrom.
BREWERS 6, ROCKIES 4 Hernan Perez hit a two-run triple in the seventh inning, lifting host Milwaukee to a comeback victory over Colorado.
DeGrom allowed homers to Randal Grichuk, Matt Carpenter and Stephen Piscotty, and the Mets lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 8-1.
Offensively, the Mets struggled against Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez, who allowed one run on four hits through eight innings.
Facing Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants Thursday night, deGrom suffered perhaps the worst outing of his big league career.
Manager Terry Collins said Wednesday the plan had not been finalized. It’s never been an issue. He’s always been down in the zone.
Collins said video of deGrom’s recent starts shows pitches staying in the “hitting area”, allowing hitters to take good swings on hittable pitches. “It is due to whatever?” That’s the kind of baseball that we haven’t seen here lately. In this particular stage of the season, the first thing you look at is fatigue. “We just have to win every night”.
DeGrom said he felt fine Wednesday.
“I’ve been working on my swing on both sides of the plate to try to get it where I need to be”, Reyes said. He got under it just a hair.
Jay Bruce apparently suffered a cramp in his right calf on a bloop double to left field. Asdrubal Cabrera had three hits, drove in a run and scored once. So they took me out as a precaution.
“Definitely I don’t consider it serious at all”.
“I think so”, said Randal Grichuk. Piscotty and Yadier Molina each had three.
“It’s hard to get results when you throw everything right down the middle”.
It was the fourth time in his career that deGrom had allowed three home runs, the most he has ever allowed in a game.
DeGrom surrendered five runs on 12 hits and two walks in 4⅔ innings.
It was deGrom’s second straight loss and the third in his last six starts. He’s understanding it’s about location and movement.
Matt Carpenter crushed a home run in the bottom of the first inning, his only hit of the night. “Right now I feel like it’s there”.
Over the first nine games of the road trip, the Mets are hitting.292, but have been betrayed by a pitching staff that had posted a 6.39 ERA.

The New York Mets have put pitcher Jonathan Niese on the 15-day disabled list and are leaning to toward knee surgery for the left-hander.
