Martinez enquired about Evans’ availability earlier this summer and the Red Devils hope that they can complete a deal for Stones by offering the Northern Ireland worldwide in exchange, according to reports.

Holgate, who now plies his trade with Barnsley in League One, supposedly underwent a medical at Finch Farm this afternoon and all things being well, he will reportedly join up with the squad at some point during the week.

“Mason’s a great young talent and I’d like to think he’d stay at the club to play regular football, but it’s up to the player“, revealed Johnson, speaking exclusively to The Star.

However, if Everton do agree to sell it will be interesting to see if Man Utd step-up their interest and decide to rival Chelsea for his signature.

“Even if we had lost on penalties I’d have had the same thought process, the players were excellent for me”.

Martinez is deliighted with the capture of the teenage Holgate and said: “With Mason, an opportunity came up and we didn’t want to lose out”. They are both leaders.

The defender attracted attention from Premier League clubs with his performances with Manchester United prominent on his trail, however, Everton have succeeded in bringing him to Merseyside.

The 21-year-old was picked out by Martinez as one of his side’s better performers when they struggled to a 2-2 draw at home to promoted Watford on Saturday.

The club will find also out the extent of the injury to left-back Leighton Baines after the England defender suffered a recurrence of an ankle problem, Martinez said.

“All young players have aspirations to play at the highest level – and I’m sure Mason is no different”. Those are compliments; it means the players are performing well – but nothing else.

Roberto Martinez has confirmed that young Barnsley defender Mason Holgate will become an Everton player in the next 24 hours
