Martinez helps Tigers beat Twins

It was easy to discern those facts on Monday at Target Field.

Martinez’s homer, his 37th, off Brian Duensing (4-1) made a loud clanking noise that echoed throughout the mostly empty stadium when it reached the bleachers in left field.

Milwaukee lost its fourth straight game and has just 10 victories in its last 36 home games against St. Louis. Leaving the bases loaded in the top of the first and following it up by allowing six earned runs over the next two innings changes the feeling of a game awfully quickly.

The Minnesota Twins have activated starting pitcher Phil Hughes from the 15-day disabled list while the right-hander is slated to start Tuesday’s game against the Detroit Tigers.

“Against (Lobstein), our approach was to stay short and take what he gave us”, Plouffe said. They wisely will give him a chance to prove he’s ready for big league action over the final two weeks of the season. “You’ve still got to be somewhat intelligent about it, but he responded today”. “I don’t think he was particularly sharp”. Trailing 4-1, with the bases loaded and one out, Miguel Sano hit a two-run single to cut the Tigers lead to one.

Eddie Rosario, who hit a home run in the third inning, delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh against Drew VerHagen. Alfredo Simon (13-9) pitched into the seventh inning. “I was just hoping to be in Triple-A and finish strong there”.

The tricky part is trying to figure out which one of the six should be limited right now.

Duffey, meanwhile, found his groove after a rocky first. The 26-year-old owns only one quality start in those outings but is not getting a lot of help from his offense, which totaled seven runs in the five games. He said everything went well and he will throw another bullpen on Wednesday.

The Detroit Tigers got out to an early lead on Tuesday and then held on for the win.

The Twins sent eight men to the plate in the first and scored four times after two were out. Twins supervisor Paul Molitor acknowedged that Hunter has been swinging higher of late. Shortstop Andrew Romine was credited with Detroit’s lone RBI.

“All wins are fun, no matter how it happens”, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. We had some good at-bats, we had some hits but didn’t capitalize by scoring runs.

Minnesota (75-69), which dropped to 1-1/2 games back in the race for the second American League wild-card spot, has to figure out when Hughes should pitch again.

The Tigers right now are in shambles and the last thing this team needs is more controversy.

For Hughes, the expectations for his first start back are pretty simple.

Detroit Tigers’ Andrew Romine hits a sacrifice bunt off Minnesota Twins pitcher Trevor May to drive in Tyler Collins in the ninth inning Tuesday in Minneapolis. The Tigers won 5-4
