Martinez, offense struggle as Cardinals lose 7-0 to Cubs

The Cubs only used him once this series – for a three-run save after they managed their only hit off Hendricks – because they didn’t need him.

For the first time since 2012 the Cubs will finish their regular season at home as they face the Cincinnati Reds September 29th through October 1st.

The Cardinals remained a half-game behind the New York Mets and one game behind the Giants for the two NL wild cards.

Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks may have just wrapped up the National League Cy Young race. They should feel confident heading into the series finale with ace Carlos Martinez (14-7, 3:05 ERA) against Jon Lester (16-4, 2.51 ERA) in what should be a good pitcher’s duel at Busch Stadium. Leake, making his second start since a stint on the disabled list due to shingles, allowed six hits and four runs (three earned). A week before the Cubs head to Fenway Park for the first time since 2011 to face the Red Sox April 28-30th.

The Cardinals have monitored Martinez all season for signs he can lead this rotation into the postseason and, perhaps, the next generation. Garcia went 4 for 5 with three runs scored and a solo home run, while Eaton collected two hits, including a homer, two runs scored, two RBIs and a walk. In his NLDS outing Hendricks went 4.2 innings pitched with 3 earned runs as well as providing some offensive support when he laid down a run scoring sacrifice bunt in the second inning, the Cubs would go on to win and take the series beating divison rival the St Louis Cardinals.

The umpire (in) famously known as “Cowboy Joe” verbally sparred with Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon on Monday in the Cubs’ win over the St. Louis Cardinals. “The way we’re losing games is not right”. Mookie Betts put Boston ahead to stay with a two-run double to ignite a five-run first. They have only two home series left, against the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates. Cardinals closer Seung Hwan Oh, who has 17 saves and a 1.87 ERA, was unavailable Saturday and Sunday against Milwaukee because of a sore groin.

Khris Davis and Marcus Semien banged out three-run homers and Stephen Vogt was 3-for-3 with two RBIs as Oakland ripped Kansas City 16-3. He entered the game having allowed just 12 homers this season and his home run per nine innings average of 0.63 was second in the National League to the Mets’ Noah Syndergaard (0.52).

And while the team continues to take their one-day-at-a-time approach, Lester didn’t deny that clinching has been on everyone’s mind.

Left-hander Daniel Coulombe (3-1) struck out five in two ideal innings to pick up the victory.

WHITE SOX 11, INDIANS 4 Avisail Garcia matched a career high with four hits, including a tiebreaking home run, and host Chicago pounded Cleveland.

Marco Estrada (8-9) yielded four runs in 5 1/3 innings.

In San Francisco, Paul Clemens fought through flu symptoms to combine with five San Diego relievers on a five-hit shutout.

PHOENIX – Yasmany Tomas had four hits including a grand slam and Brandon Drury and Mitch Haniger also homered in Arizona’s victory over Colorado at Chase Field.

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Leonys Martin tied a team record with three doubles, scored twice and finished 4-for-4 in Seattle’s rout of Los Angeles at Angel Stadium.
