Martinez, Verlander boost Tigers past Mets

That decision paid off when Travis d’Arnaud poked a single right to him. J.D. Martinez scooped up the ball and released a strong throw toward home plate, with the ball bouncing once before landing in the glove of Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

“I was kind of in a way anticipating it a little bit”, Martinez said.

“After we got the lead, I went out to the mound telling myself that, no matter what, I couldn’t blow it”, Syndergaard said. After Casey McGehee’s grounder slipped through the right side of the infield, Detroit ran itself out of the eighth inning with a baserunning blunder, and Walker’s two-run homer in the top of the ninth gave NY a 3-1 win over the Tigers on Sunday. Martinez had a baserunning gaffe and got caught in a rundown between third and home.

Sunday’s game saw the Mets score first in the seventh before surrendering the lead in the bottom of the inning, and the Tigers made a critical base-running blunder in the eighth that loomed large.

Jacob deGrom held the Tigers to a one run over six and two-thirds innings on Sunday.

“J.D. picked me up big time”, Rodriguez said.

Rosario’s seventh homer put the Twins up 3-2 after Erasmo Ramirez (7-9) walked Eduardo Escobar. They finally scored two runs in the seventh with the Tigers gifted them the pair with Mike Aviles failing to make two plays -one an error – and Miguel Cabrera turning what should have been a double play into a run-scoring fielder’s choice when his throw hit off Neil Walker’s head. Things turned when deGrom walked eighth place hitter James McCann, moving the tying run to second.

NEW YORK: The Mets have lost seven of Verrett’s lat eight starts, are 1-4 in his last five road starts, and are 1-6 in his last seven road games versus a team with a home winning percentage of greater than.600.

After ending the first half of the season hitting.254, Walker has come on on fire in the second half.

The Mets hit into three double plays in the final four innings in a loss Saturday night.

Rodriguez connected off Ross Ohlendorf (5-7), a 413-foot drive to the left-field bleachers that gave the Pirates their second win in seven games in the midst of 12 straight games against teams who are at least 10 games under.500. Castellanos left Saturday’s game with a non-displaced fracture of his left hand.

Verlander was cruising until he walked Jay Bruce on a 3-2 pitch in the fourth.

“No question that was his best outing of the season”, manager Brad Ausmus said.

“Noah is so good that we lose sight of the fact that he’s a 23-year-old who is still learning how to pitch”, Collins said. ” ‘Hey, look, guys, OK, we’ve got a lot of guys hurt”.

The Tigers will call up INF Casey McGehee and LHP Kyle Ryan. LHP Daniel Norris will eventually take Zimmermann’s spot in the rotation. “Maybe that’s a play that you challenge no matter what, because the worst that can happen is you still lose the game”. Sanchez had a good day, but he was helped along mightily by the Mets’ bats rolling over pitch after pitch.
