Marvel at SDCC: ‘Doctor Strange’ unveils epic new trailer

The announcement came at the end of Marvel’s Comic-Con International presentation, which was held off the back of the buzz from the Wonder Woman panel – with Warner Bros. beating Marvel to the punch with a female-fronted superhero film two years ahead of Captain Marvel.

The first person to dare mention “Girl Power” gets a punch in the face.

Director Scott Derrickson – who also brought out stars Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mads Mikkelsen, and Benedict Wong – ran a scene from the film in which Cumberbatch’s rigorously scientific-minded unusual meets Swinton’s mystical Ancient One and is first exposed to the mysteries of astral traveling.

Marvel closed things out on a high note, however, with an obligatory all-Marvel photo, including the new Captain Marvel herself – Oscar-winner Brie Larson, who was greeted with a rapturous standing ovation.

“It’s an honor and a privilege”, a visibly trembling Gadot told the Comic-Con devotees about bringing the character to the big screen. Director Ayer’s fingerprints have been all over the footage, and what people have seen couldn’t be more different than the trailers of Gal Gadot’s “Wonder Woman” and director Zack Snyder’s “Justice League”. This appears to be a depiction of the Wonder Woman original story, which has been redone many times in the comics, of how Diana (Wonder Woman’s given name) helps Steve Trevor (longtime Wonder Woman side character and occasional love-interest) on Paradise Island, home of the Amazons.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming”, starring Tom Holland, will be a teen comedy, following 15-year-old Peter Parker hiding his superhero alter-ego as he gets through the struggles of homework, girls and puberty. And despite the already huge scale that Marvel has taken their movie world, there is apparently even more that could be done with it.

Kurt Russell, also present for the panel, was confirmed as Star Lord’s (Pratt) father in a newly release trailer, resulting in a resounding cheer from the audience. “The Ancient One is a title”. Again we have no footage to show you, but we do have a couple of juicy plot details including the fact that Lupita Nyong’o will play a character called Nakia in the film who may be corrupted into a villain called Malice by Michael B Jordan’s baddie Killmonger, and that she’s excited to “kick some ass”.

In addition to the trailer, Marvel also unveiled a new poster for the film which provides a great look at Strange’s costume, as well as maintaining some psychedelic elements.

After the mixed reviews of Batman V Superman from earlier this year, it looks like Justice League might have taken some notes from the massive success of Deadpool’s light-hearted but serious comic book movie template.
