Marvel’s Bringing a Runaways TV Series to Hulu

Marvel is expanding its TV footprint to Hulu.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is heading to Hulu, with the streaming service giving the green light to a pilot episode and additional scripts for a new series based upon Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona’s Runaways. Savage added, “Josh and I can’t wait to get to work for Marvel and Hulu”.
For Schwartz and Savage, the teen series is right in their wheelhouse, as the pair were behind two of the most successful teen dramas of all time: “Gossip Girl” and “The O.C”.
The book series debuted in 2003 and is still in print with a short break in later 2004 when it was canceled but brought back by popular demand.
The most interesting thing about this announcement is the fact that it seemed as if Netflix or ABC would be the ones to scoop up any potential Marvel television product, and Runaways, a fan favorite series since its debut, seemed like the ideal opportunity to attract a different audience than, say, Daredevil or Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

A brief synopsis for the show has been revealed, and it sounds like it will be sticking closely to the comic book penned by Brian K. Vaughan. Schwartz and Savage will co-write and serve as showrunners, which will follow six diverse teens who can’t stand each other, but must unite against a common foe – their parents. With Marvel television series on ABC and Netflix, a show originating on Hulu would be a first for the company. Because of the age of the leading characters, Runaways will also be a rare opportunity for Marvel to go after the YA crowd, which is probably why Schwartz and Savage were attached to this project.
