Mary Boyle search today was planned some time ago
Gardaí investigating the disappearance and presumed murder of six-year-old Mary Boyle nearly 40 years ago have begun searching a piece of land close to where she was last seen alive near Ballyshannon in Co Donegal.

The six-year-old from Keadue went missing from her grandparents’ home in Cashelard, Ballyshannon while on a visit in March 1977.
A Garda spokesperson says the search had been planned for some time.
The event has been described as a peaceful and non-political demonstration.
However, there has already been a separate review investigation ongoing since 2011 – the Northern Regional Review Team – headed up by an assistant commissioner.
Gardaí confirmed earlier this week that members of the Serious Crime Review Team (SCRT) would be visiting Ballyshannon as part of a new review into the case.
However, it is understood this dig is being carried out by local units, not national gardaí.

Local officers have begun a dig in hard terrain, which will involve drainage.
