The Spartans didn’t really need their star quarterback on this day. Mackenzie MacEachern has been leaned on as well but the Spartans last weekend saw increased output from guys like Joe Cox, Michael Ferrantino and Villiam Haag which made a huge difference.

This week MI State plays host to 2-7 Maryland who have yet to win a game in Big Ten play.

Even with Cook out, Maryland didn’t pose much of an upset threat. He also ran the ball four times, including a big 11-yard run on third down to set up a Holmes touchdown. Kings hauled in a 28-yard pass from Connor Cook with a diving one-handed effort early in the second quarter on a 3rd-and-6. After missing the rest of that series, Cook returned for the remainder of the first half but did not look like himself. Brandon Ross and Perry Hills have combined for 1,027 rushing yards and six scores while Hills has thrown for 845 yards and eight touchdowns, but also has 11 interceptions.

He finished just 6 of 20 for 77 yards and an interception. Dantonio wanted to get the backup quarterback a few work with the regular season winding down, although he didn’t tell O’Connor beforehand. “Maybe it was a trial version just to make sure I’d be ready in case that were to happen”.
MI State had no problem beating the Maryland Terrapins who lost five turnovers and all but gave the game away.

That game knocked MI State out of any real contention for the college football playoff, but the Spartans still recovered well enough to beat Maryland 37-15 the following week. Tyler O’Connor lead the offense, as the Spartans were able to escape with a 24 to 7 victory over the Terrapins, moving to 9-1 on the year. The Spartans settle for a 35-yard field goal as time expires on the second quarter, and MSU ends the half up 17-7.
