Maryland to bring improved passing game to West Virginia

It’s among the notes on the Terrapins heading into a road game Saturday in Morgantown against West Virginia.

Rivalry. When college football fans hear that word their mind may take them to “The Iron Bowl”, “The Red River Showdown”, or even “The Seminole War Canoe”.

West Virginia leads the series 27-22-2 which has been going on since the year 1919.

Holgorsen points out that this doesn’t just come down to Durante and Gibson, should they have troubles. The secondary has been a stunning disappointment, and the offense hasn’t quite been steady enough with the passing attack. No longer is he the anonymous specialist, an afterthought only talked about the handful of times he sees the field in a game; rather, this soft-spoken junior who made two winning field goals last season is viewed both as a crucial part of the team and as one of Football Bowl Subdivision’s most reliable kickers.

The Terrapins are 2-1 for the 2015 season. Howard responded immediately, flashing the skills that intrigued Holgorsen in the first place while fulfilling a life-long dream of being a Big 12 quarterback.

Lambert enters the game today against Maryland with a much different stature than he did going into the teams’ meeting in 2014. The duo has combined for more sacks (8.0) than any other duo in the Big Ten Conference.

A win sends either of these teams off in the right direction as they tackle conference play next. Wade has stated in the past that the Mountaineers intrigue him and that they are on his short list of interested schools. The O should be able to do whatever it wants to with the passing attack. They also are doing well at tackle with (Lucas) as a returning starter and (Cajuste) as a freshman. His 30 made field goals were the most in FBS and by the end of the season, he was a finalist for the Lou Groza Award, given annually to the best kicker in college football. Maryland has been pretty inconsistent this season, but I like them to keep this game interesting.

The loss to Bowling Green brought everything into focus for the coach. Bowling Green passed for nearly 500 yards and 6 touchdown downs in their routing of Maryland in week 2.

What advantage does experience give to a cornerback against a young wide receiver?

-DB Antwaine Carter, a special teams standout, was lost for the season with a Lisfranc injury. He set an NCAA record by making 16 field goals of at least 40 yards, two of which (a 47-yarder at Maryland and a 55-yarder at Texas Tech) won games for West Virginia with no time left. This year stopping Likely is just as important especially with the hot start he is off to.

Scouting the passing game: Rowe had three picks last week and this will be the best pass defense he or the Terrapins have seen this season.

On defense the name of the game is turnovers.

The headliner was quarterback Caleb Rowe, the gunslinger from Landrum, S.C. In just his fourth career start, and despite an early interception and three overall, Rowe led the Terps to a 35-17 win with four touchdown passes, displaying touch and poise throughout. For Maryland to have any chance, Moore and junior Levern Jacobs will have to produce. Maryland can be run heavy and will look to make West Virginia respect it’s 203.7 yards per game.

These two teams have gone back and forth in recent years, but I would be lying if I said I was anxious about the Terrapins leaving Morgantown with a win this weekend. Lawrence battled with a UT defender while the ball was in the air.
