Masahiro Tanaka: Tanaka takes loss against Indians

Santana turned on Tanaka’s 95-mph fastball, lining a home run into the right-field stands.

The rookie right-hander’s teammates, though, see something special in the 21 year old.

Backed by five early runs, Severino went six innings and beat the Indians 6-2 at Yankee Stadium. “He’s been good to watch”.

The 21-year-old Severino faced the Tribe on August 11, and picked up a no-decision after allowing two runs over six innings.

Severino impressed Girardi during spring training, and that has carried over to the big league mound.

“Innings where I was able to go strike 1, strike 2, I think it was in better tempo, good rhythm”, Tanaka said through an interpreter.

“I looked in my glove and it wasn’t there”, Ryan said. I would think he could become an option again next month.

New York has a chance for a split of the four-game series Sunday, following a pregame ceremony to retire left-hander Andy Pettitte’s No. 46.

Tanaka didn’t have much run support, with Greg Bird’s RBI single in the fourth representing the only run the Yankees scored with Tanaka in the game. One out later, McCann connected on a drive to right-center. Brett Gardner hit a two-run home run and Brian McCann delivered a solo shot to put the Yankees ahead 3-1.

Salazar recovered to pitch 4 2-3 innings.

Severino, winless in his first three starts despite a 3.18 ERA, allowed one run on three hits – with four walks and six strikeouts – before Adam Warren replaced him to start the seventh inning.

Coming across the bag, Gregoruis had to come up on his toes to glove the ball.

Once Carrasco exited, the Indians staggered in the eighth before adding three insurance runs in the ninth.

Francona objected and was tossed, the second ejection doled out by Iassogna this series.

If Severino was asked to cite his body of work to back up his “I belong” statement, perhaps he’d point to the sixth inning Saturday.

“For the first time I feel like I belong”, Severino said. “The stuff I had when I pitched in Toronto, I just didn’t have it today”. Indians RHP Cody Anderson (strained left oblique) threw about 60 pitches in a two-inning simulated game and could begin a rehab assignment next week…. He had a bullpen session Friday.

With one out, Ramirez hit a triple down the right-field line.

“They’ve given us trouble”, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. OF Dustin Ackley (back strain) was working out at first base during warmups…. That’s their highest total in a nine-inning game since August 9, 2014, which was also against Cleveland.

The Indians sit in fifth play in the American League Central with little hope of making the playoffs.

Severino has a 3.18 ERA after three starts with the Yankees.

Yankees: LHP CC Sabathia (4-9) faces his former team for the second time in less than two weeks. With runners at the corners and two outs in the fifth, he hit a grounder back up the middle.
