Mass. Republicans to elect delegates at 9 caucuses

Early on at the state’s convention over the weekend, the Republican Party of Virginia was expected to put up a slate comprised of a mix of each presidential campaign’s supporters. Cruz supporters dominated the party’s convention on Saturday at James Madison University in Harrisonburg. Delegates tied to candidates who drop out usually become “unbound”, although states like Virginia require them to pledge their votes in the first round of the national convention even if their candidates are out of the running. The others supported Ohio Gov. John Kasich or were undecided. But they didn’t complain when, although Cruz and Kasich together won 35 percent of the primary vote, because of Arizona’s rules neither got even a single delegate.

A recent Washington Post survey of delegates found Cruz could pick up an additional 130-170 delegates on a second ballot if Trump doesn’t have enough to win the nomination on the first ballot.

Sixteen delegates and 13 alternates were approved at the state party’s convention Saturday with only eight dissenting votes out of nearly 300 cast. Republicans will elect 27 of the state’s 42 GOP delegates, three each in caucuses held in the state’s nine congressional districts.

The only confirmed delegates from MA so far are state party chair Kirsten Hughes, national committeeman Ron Kaufman and national committeewoman Chanel Prunier. While Cruz is playing within the partys rules, Trumps claim that what Cruz is doing amounts to “stealing” resonates with voters.In mid-April, after Cruz swept Colorados elected delegates, stay-at-home mom Erin Behrens said she felt sick about what was happening to her candidate.
