At a press conference at around noon on Sunday, authorities said 42-year-old Ronald Tarentino, Jr. was shot after he pulled over a vehicle at around 12:30 a.m. on Rochdale Street.

The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Jorge Zambrano, was shot by officers and was later pronounced dead at UMass Memorial Medical Center, according to McKeon.

An hourslong manhunt following the fatal shooting of a MA police officer has come to an end. A state trooper was injured during a gunfire exchange with Zambrano but is expected to recover.

‘We will leave no stone unturned in our investigation to determine who was involved, ‘ Sluckis said.

Six officers have been fatally shot in MA since 2000, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

Strangers and other officers lined the roads as a procession with Tarentino’s body headed to the Boston Medical Examiner’s Office Sunday.

Nineteen law enforcement officers have died in firearm-related incidents in the United States so far this year, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Fund.

Tarentino left behind a wife and three children, reported the Boston Globe.

This story has been corrected to show Tarentino was with the Auburn police two years, not three.

Phillip Stanikmas told the Worcester Telegram & Gazette that Tarentino kept an eye out for his 91-year-old mother when she was home alone.
